Raise your hand if you or someone you love has been affected by breast cancer. Unfortunately, statistics indicate that there are a lot of hands up right now. Every two minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. That means that one in eight women will receive this diagnosis at some point in her life – maybe more than once.
A breast cancer diagnosis leaves a woman needing support, information, and guidance as she makes critical decisions about her health. There are many organizations available to help, so where do you turn?
This Pink Month, we’re shining a much-deserved spotlight on National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), one of Porte’s five #DoorToChange charities! NBCF’s mission is to help women now by providing help and inspiring hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education, and support services.

Helping Women Now
Breast cancer survivor Janelle Hail founded NBCF in 1991, envisioning a world where no one will navigate breast cancer alone. Recognized as one of the leading breast cancer organizations in the world, NBCF is Helping Women Now® through their National Mammography Program, Patient Navigator Program, HOPE Kits, breast health education, and patient support programs. A recipient of Charity Navigator’s highest 4-star rating, NBCF has provided more than one million free mammograms, early detection, and patient navigation services to uninsured patients and those in need of financial assistance.
NBCF recently went beyond the resources and support groups it provides for Stage IV (metastatic) breast cancer patients, launching a weekend retreat program. During the metastatic retreats, a small group of patients and their caregivers experience oncology consultations, end-of-life preparations, group exercise, and other meaningful activities. According to participant feedback, the retreats provide patients with renewed hope, increased knowledge, and the reminder that they are not alone.

More Than Money
Porte’s corporate employees regularly volunteer at NBCF headquarters in Frisco, Texas, packing HOPE Kits. On a recent visit, a group from the Marketing Department received a tour and watched a video about NBCF’s services for women at all stages of their breast cancer journeys. After the tour, they spent some time handwriting cards to each HOPE Kit recipient to offer encouragement and support. Then they worked together to assemble the HOPE Kits.
NBCF thoughtfully sources and selects items for the HOPE Kits to meet the needs of breast cancer patients and help them feel supported during their most challenging moments. Items typically include tea for comfort, a water bottle as a reminder to stay hydrated, lotion for dry skin, and other self-care items. Those handwritten cards are the last item to go in the box, and HOPE Kit recipients rave about them in particular.
